    Italian photographer, Marco Giovanelli, went in search of these legendary girls in March 2016.

    He spoke of: 'These ladies in fact challenged my own prejudice, judgment and definition of beauty. 

    'The culture of tattooing their faces is now demise however I met a few younger women who, despite the mainstream pressures, tattooed their face to retain their tradition alive.'
